Long hair and a snubby face that often leads to some health problems for the breed characterize them. The Persian cat breed is among the most widely recognized due to the characteristics that are present in this particular breed of cat.

There are many color variations of the breed as well as color pattern. There are also some variations of the facial features in some of the Persian cats that range from a snubby nose to a straighter nose. White Persian cats are among the most popular colors sought by buyers and pet seekers.

Background Of Persian Cats

This breed of cat originated in the Iranian plateaus bordering Mesopotamia. Some illustrations also connect the Persian cat with the ancient Pallas cat. An Italian by the name of Pietro Della Valle introduced the breed to European society. The first known written acknowledgement of the Persian cat was in the year 1871 in the annals of the Cat Fanciers Association. White Persian cats were already around during that time.

Standard of the Persian Cat

Persian cats usually come in a variety of colors such as white, blue, black and tortoiseshell. And are generally accepted in any color or any pattern marking as well. Silver, black and white Persian cats top the most sought after colors as pets while other colors are also sought after for show. White Persian cats and others with lighter coloration have a difficult time keeping themselves clean and may need their owner’s help in doing so. Regular bathing, conscientious drying and brushing are among the grooming chores that these longhaired cats need.

The temperament of Persian cats is basically similar to other cats. They are highly independent and need to go out once in a while. Despite their very refined appearance, Persians, especially silver or white Persian cats are very capable of taking care of themselves. They may look fragile but they are very hardy.

Persian cats are coveted because of their beautiful looks. The more popular cats are silver, black and white Persian cats. The coloring of the cats does not affect their temperament or their activity. There are some illnesses or sicknesses that are associated with Persian cats due mainly to their facial structure. Some breeders strive too much to get the blunt faced cats that some selective breeding has turned out deformities in the cats. These deformities contribute to difficulty of breathing and nasal problems.

white cat breeds

Facts About White Cat Breeds

Cats of the domestic variety are very popular for pets. There are many white cat breeds that allow the solid white color in their standard or allow only the solid white color for a singular cat breed. Among these white cat breeds are the Maine Coon cat, Persian cat, Oriental Longhair cat, Siberian cat, American Shorthairs and many more.

Most cat breeds allow solid colored white cats in their breed standard. It is only in those breeds that only have a singular color, bi-colors or markings that do not allow solid colored white cats. Many people like white cat breeds and some even prefer this color for their cats. Many longhaired varieties have white colors accepted in their breed standard.

What You Need To Know About White Cat Breeds

Most white cat breeds suffer from sunburn especially in the ears. This is because the fur is thinner in the ears. Frequent exposure to the sun can lead to skin cancer in most breeds of white cats. Application of sunscreen can be done but it is better to keep white cat breeds indoors when the sun is at its most punishing.

White cats usually have blue eyes or odd colored eyes. This is common among white cat breeds and is noticed all over the world. White cat breeds are also prone to hearing problems or deafness. In odd eyed white cats, the side that has the blue eye is usually the side that has a hearing problem or deafness.

It is a superstitious belief that white cats are a sign of good luck. If there is a white cat on your doorstep just before your wedding this signifies lasting happiness. In other cultures, any of the white cat breeds are considered bad luck. It all depends on where you are and what culture you believe in.

Do not try to color your white cat with any other color other than those recommended by vets. This is because the way that cats clean themselves will ensure that they will ingest any foreign substance that may be dangerous to their health.

Some white cats may need to be kept indoors due to their propensity to deafness. This could lead to accidents and other occurrences that could lead injury or death. White cats are also prone to getting dirty easily although, the shorthaired ones can clean themselves more easily compared to the longhaired varieties. Most cats enjoy human companionship and are great as pets.

types of siamese cats

The Two General Types Of Siamese Cats

Siamese cats are very popular cats and they are among the most highly recognizable breed in the world because of their dark points. You might then be surprised to see two entirely different looking cats both called Siamese cats. There are two basic types of Siamese cats in the world today. The first one is the traditional Siamese cat and the other is the modern Siamese cat. The differences between the two types of Siamese cats are quite striking and you can easily tell which is which.

The Traditional Siamese Cats

These types of Siamese cats are the unchanged cats from the original ones that were imported from Siam more than a decade ago. The cats that a British Consul General brought home to England were large boned cats with round faces and healthy looking bodies. These types of Siamese cats are robust and heavy. They also have darker seal points and some have the traditional kinks on their tails while others have the tendency to go cross-eyed.

The Modern Siamese cats

The modern types of Siamese cats are derived from the traditional cats but they were bred selectively to have longer more tubular bodies with long legs and finer bone structure. These types of Siamese cats also have a wedge shaped head and their ears are more pronounced compared to the traditional cats. Their heads have an overall triangular look and they may sometimes appear very thin. Some of these types of Siamese cats have varying shades of dark brown or grey on their points. Most, if not all, of the modern cats do not have any kinks on their tails or the propensity to become cross eyed.

Both types of Siamese cats have the same striking blue eyes and the traditional creamy base color of their fur. The two types of Siamese cats are also very well adjusted to people and communicate well with us. The modern Siamese cats are more prone to sickness and disease compared to the traditional and this is probably because of genetic maneuvering and too much human intervention to achieve the breed.

In spite of being the more healthy and robust of the two types of Siamese cats, the traditional Siamese cats are rarer than the modern ones. Much debate has arisen to why the modern cats were developed but there is actually not much that can be done regarding this since the breed is already established.

traditional siamese cats

Characteristics Of The Traditional Siamese Cat

Siamese cats are very well known and well loved cats. They are usually recognized due to their light coat and darker points. Traditional Siamese cats differ greatly from the modern Siamese cats of today. Both breeds stem from the original Siamese cats from Siam, which are legendary.

Appearance Of Traditional Siamese Cats

Traditional Siamese cats are of bigger bodies than the modern version of Siamese cats. The have bigger heads, which earned them the nickname “apple heads” and have a more muscular body than modern Siamese cats. Compared to the modern Siamese cats, the traditional Siamese cats have a more striking color contrast with their seal points and their lighter colored bodies. As with modern Siamese cats, traditional Siamese cats also have beautiful blue eyes.

Some, if not most, traditional Siamese cats have kinks in their tails. This is a genetic trait that has been eradicated from the modern Siamese cat version. Another common traditional Siamese cat characteristic is its tendency to have a cross-eyed appearance. This trait has also been bred out of the modern Siamese cat. Not all traditional Siamese cats have the kink in the tail or the cross-eyed appearance.

Traditional Siamese cats also have more proportionate ears and shorter legs than the modern Siamese cats. Most Siamese cats, whether traditional Siamese cats or modern, are very fond of people and like nothing better than to spend their time with their family of humans. They are susceptible to hearing loss or deafness and are not suitable to be outside for long periods of time.

Brief History Of Siamese Cats

The history of all Siamese cats starts in Thailand, which was then called Siam. Legend has it that these cats were either guardians of a sacred temple or valued pets of the Siamese royalty. The traditional Siamese cats also figure in a local legend that tells how the cats got their kink in the tails. A British Consul General brought the cats to the United Kingdom. The pair that the Consul General brought gave birth and the offspring caused much admiration and envy thus sparking an immense interest in the breed. Several other cats were brought from Siam and these original cats are the common gene pool of most Siamese cats in the United Kingdom now.

Some breeders have selectively bred the Siamese into the modern version that is now present today. This version is more popular then the traditional one but there are also many other cat fanciers that prefer the traditional version.

traditional siamese cat

The Siamese Cat And Its Traditional Elegance

The traditional Siamese cat has been a source of fascination for hundreds of years. The cat breed has long been admired for its elegant beauty, its loving personality, and its acute intelligence. There are some variations on the traditional Siamese cat breed, yet, in the end, it is the traditional Siamese cat that wins out in all the cat show competitions. It is important to appreciate both the diversity within the breed as well as the traditional characteristics of Siamese cats.

Historical Context

Siamese cats were first exported from the country of Siam (now called Thailand) in the mid eighteen hundreds. They first appeared in England when an ambassador from Siam brought them as a gift, and were soon entered in cat shows. By the beginning of the twentieth century, traditional Siamese cats were appearing in American cat shows as well.

Characterizing Tradition

There are specific characteristics that can be attributed to Siamese cats, both in physical appearance and in personality. These qualities are looked favorably upon by judges in cat show competitions and have come to define the traditional Siamese cat.

The ideal Siamese Cat has long, tapering lines and is of a medium size. The body is tubular, long, and graceful; the head is long, tapered, and wedge-shaped. Traditionally, the Siamese cat has no break at the whiskers or the nose and has distinctively large ears. Another stunning characteristic of the Siamese cat is its almond-shaped, piercing blue eyes.

Ideally, the cat’s tail should be long and thin; its coat should be short, fine, and glossy. Though the Siamese cat can come in a variety of colors, there are several that are specific to the traditional breed. Typically, judges in cat shows are looking for a Himalayan pattern in blue, seal, chocolate, and lilac point.

Not Interested

Just as there are some qualities that would identify a Siamese cat as being ideal and traditional, there are other characteristics that would disqualify the cat from such a label. These characteristics include: white feet or toes, long hair, malocclusion, eyes other than blue, mouth breathing, weak hind legs, and a visible kink in the tail.

Don’t Mess With Tradition!

The Siamese cat breed is perhaps the oldest of all breeds. It has continued to awe and amaze those who encounter it, both with its beauty and its intelligence. Despite the differences within the breed, it is important to appreciate and recognize the traditional beauty that has defined this breed for hundreds of years.

toilet training your cat

Toilet Training your Cat Requires Patience but Reaps Big Rewards

If you have owned cats in the past, you know what it’s like to clean out a litter box regularly. Nobody likes that chore, but what if you could keep your kitty and never clean out another litter box again? Most cat owners would be enthusiastically nodding in delight about now, and wondering what the trick could possibly be. Toilet training your cat is the process of teaching your pet to move from his litter box to using the actual toilet. Imagine – no more scooping, no more cleaning and no more kitty litter. Simply flush the mess and you are on your way! Yes, toilet training your cat is indeed a possibility, as long as you arm yourself with a bit of time and a lot of patience – and you can encourage your cat to do the same.

Step One: Move the Litter Box

The first step in toilet training your cat is to move his litter box into the bathroom where the training will take place. Put the box right next to the toilet and allow your cat to use it in that location for a few days. After this period of time, begin raising the litter box, using books or magazines, around two inches each day. Once the box is even with the rim of the toilet bowl, you are ready to begin transitioning your cat from the box to the toilet. First, place an aluminum pan over the toilet bowl, making sure that it can support your cat’s weight. Fill this bowl with about a half inch of kitty litter. For convenience sake, it is best to use a litter that is flushable.

Step Two: Transition your Cat to the Toilet Seat

Once your kitty is accustomed to using her pan on the top of the toilet, begin poking holes around the bottom of the pan to force her to begin leaving her paws on the toilet seat to go to the bathroom. This will begin transitioning to toilet training your cat. Start with one or two holes so that she will begin using her front paws on the seat, and gradually poke holes for the two back paws as well. At the same time you are poking the holes, you can cut down on the amount of kitty litter you are placing in the tray, so that your cat also gets used to going to the bathroom without litter. Once your cat is consistently standing on the toilet seat to go to the bathroom, you can remove the tray completely and the toilet training of your cat is complete.

This entire process of toilet training your cat will usually take two or three months to complete. If there come a point when your kitty begins using a corner of the room for her “duty” instead, you are probably trying to move her through the process too quickly. Simply back up a step or two and wait a week or so before trying again. Once you have successfully toilet trained your cat, you will never be cleaning out another litter box again, so stick with it!

teacup persian cats

Important Information on Teacup Persian Cats

Out of all the different breeds of cats in the world, one of the most unique is the teacup. Spotted cat breeds are one of the most popular breeds among cat lovers. Their interesting appearance makes them a top choice at pet shops and animal shelters alike. Spotted cats can be found in pure breed cats and mixed breed cats. In addition to there being a few basic spotted patterns, there are also a few common breeds that comprise the spotted cat group.

The Tabby Pattern

When describing the patterns and colors of cats, there are several terms that are usually used. These terms are: solids, calico, tortoise shelled, and tabbies. The pattern that typically includes spotted cat breeds is the tabby group, although spots can sometimes be found on calico cats as well.

Being A Bengal Cat

Bengal cats are one of the major spotted cat breeds, and it is a large cat with shiny fur. Bengal cats typically display the brown spotted tabby pattern, but sometimes you might find a Bengal cat with a marbled pattern as well. Sometimes, a Bengal cat will be referred to as being “rosetted.” This means that more than one color tone can be found within the spots.

Mew Mew Egyptian Mau

Egyptian Mau cats are unique because they are the only spotted cat breed that has been spotted from the beginning. All other spotted cat breeds have been bred to display spots. Egyptian Mau cats are thought to have originated in Egypt, but there is no documented proof of this. However, it is known that the Egyptian Mau cat was brought to the United States sometime around 1956.

Ocicat Combo Cats

Ocicat cats are another spotted cat breed. This breed of cat is a combination of the Siamese, Abyssinian, and American Shorthair cats. Although the Ocicat has a wild appearance, there is no wild cat in its blood. In addition to being spotted, Ocicat cats can be mackerel, ticked, and classic tabby. However, only the spotted Ocicat cats are considered for competition in cat shows.

Safari Cats—From The Jungle To Your Living Room

The Safari cat is a new breed of cat, and there are less than 40 of them that exist right now. This cat comes from breeding the spotted Geoffrey’s cat, which comes from South America, with the common domestic cat. This is quite a feat because, while the domestic cat has 38 chromosomes, the Geoffrey’s cat only has 36.

An Interesting Twist

Spotted cats are popular because they provide an interesting contrast to the plain, solid cat breeds. The many colors, patterns, and designs make for a stately, wild, and neat looking cat!

siamese cat training

Siamese Cat Training Methods

Among the many cat breeds, the Siamese cats are considered highly intelligent and can be trained. There are many benefits of training your cat to do tricks or to just learn a few things to do in your home. Cats that know tricks can perform in shows and other events while cats that know how to open cabinets in your home can easily be trained to retrieve things for you. Other forms of training are potty training and going out the kitty door and coming back in.

The question now is how to implement Siamese cat training onto your very own Siamese cat. There are a few things to keep in mind when you contemplate Siamese cat training on your own. Among these things are if you have the patience and perseverance to do so and if your cat is susceptible to training or any kind. You can find this out by trying Siamese cat training on your cat on basic things such as potty training.

Ways to Encourage Your Cat

You also need to know how to encourage your cat to accept Siamese cat training and to be happy about it. Using food for Siamese cat training usually works better than praise. Compared to dogs who can get motivated by praise, cats are easier to motivate with food. Most cats prefer liver or bacon compared to kitty treats but kitty treats are also doable if there is no liver or bacon around.

It is also a good thing not try Siamese cat training when your cat is otherwise preoccupied or is not interested, after a heavy meal or when it is in the middle of a routine. Some cats prefer to keep to their routines and there is actually no way of forcing a cat to do things that it does not like to do without any risk of conflict.

It is best to start Siamese cat training when they are still kittens. Using a litter box can be daunting for some bigger cats especially if they are used to going outside to do their business. Training cats not to scratch the furniture can also be frustrating for some homeowners and you will need to provide them with their very own scratching post for this.

Siamese cat training need not be an ordeal. There are institutions that you can enroll into have your cat trained in tricks or just basic training when going out. Unlike dogs, cats are not a terrible threat to people when they are untrained and you usually just train cats to behave well in the home.

siamese cat history

A Brief Siamese Cat History

Siamese cats are among the most highly recognizable breed of cats in the world. They are also among the most popular and well loved because of their intelligence and their people skills. The history of the Siamese cat is not as in depth as many people would like it to be. Actually, before the cat came to the United Kingdom, there is very little known about the history of the Siamese cat.

Siamese Cat Appearance In Ancient Illustrations

In the late 1700’s, in Russia, engravings of a cat that looked very similar to the Siamese cat were found. Illustrations of the Siamese cats among others were also present in an ancient text called the Cat-Book Poems. These are the earliest recorded Siamese cat history writings in the world.

Siamese Beginnings In The United Kingdom

Siamese cat history became clearer when in the year 1884 a British Consul general brought home a pair of Siamese cats from Siam. Legend has it that the pair of breeding cats that the British Consul General Gould brought with him was a gift from the royal family of Siam. The pair of cats gave birth to 3 kittens, which when displayed in the United Kingdom they captured the hearts of many. Their fame brought about the importation of several other pairs of Siamese cats and the rest is Siamese cat history.

Two Main Kinds Of Siamese Cats

Today, there are two kinds of Siamese cat breeds, the traditional and the modern. The traditional breed has upheld the old characteristics and traits of the original cats brought from Siam while the modern Siamese breed has elongated the build of the cat and made it more svelte with longer legs and a smaller head. Siamese cat history now has two different breeds to take note of.

The traditional breed is less popular than the modern breed but many traditional breed fanciers still strive to maintain and uphold the original standards. Other traits that modern Siamese breeds have gotten rid of are the usually kinks on the tail of the cats and their tendency to have a cross-eyed appearance. The story relating to the kinks on the cats’ tails is among the many legends associated with Siamese cat history.

The many variations of the Siamese cat colors and length of coat has also made the breed very diverse and the only common things among the breeds are the points in the extremities and the blue color of the cat’s eyes.

siamese cat breeders

What to Look for in Siamese Cat Breeders

If you are looking for a Siamese cat to add to your family, you are far from alone in your quest for Siamese cat breeders. The Siamese has become one of the most popular breeds of cats today, both on the show circuit and in homes. Siamese cats crave the attention of their owners, and will be happiest curled up in your lap or sleeping nearby wherever you are. These cats are also extremely vocal, and will not hesitate to let you know if they are unhappy or lonely. Siamese cats make wonderful pets with children and adults alike, and can even get along with other pets when they are introduced early in life.

Which Breeder is Right for You?

Siamese cat breeders have a tendency to specialize in a particular type of Siamese, whether it is the look of the traditional or classic cat that they prefer. If you are on the hunt for a Siamese cat breeder, it is best to do your research and get a good idea of the look you want in your Siamese before you begin contacting breeders to find out what they have available. This way you can ask the appropriate questions that will help you to narrow your search of Siamese cat breeders rather quickly. For example, some Siamese cat breeders will prefer cats with a rounder head, others will like the stockier build, and still others will choose to breed cats with a sleeker, more angular appearance.

Once you have located a Siamese cat breeder, don’t be surprised if the tables get turned and you get asked numerous questions by the breeder before you are allowed to purchase a kitten. Breeders take their job and their cats quite seriously, and want to make sure that they find good homes for their animals where they will receive the care that they deserve. You will probably have to sign a contract stating that you will have your cat spayed or neutered at the proper time, and that you will never have your pet declawed. Most Siamese cat breeders will also want to know that your cat will be an exclusively indoor pet.

To ensure that you get a true Siamese, you will probably want to find out from your Siamese cat breeder whether his cats are registered. Keep in mind that even cats from superb lineages may not have registration papers, so you can get a high quality cat from a Siamese cat breeder that is not registered. However, the only way to know for sure is to have those registration papers that offer proof of the lineage, so if this is an important factor to you, you will probably want to find a Siamese cat breeder that does actually register his animals.

Siamese cats can bring years of companionship and enjoyment to your family. By selecting a good Siamese cat breeder, you can rest assured that you are getting the best cat possible.

siamese cat behavior

Understanding Siamese Cat Behavior

Before you get a Siamese cat as a pet for your home, you need to understand Siamese cat behavior. This is especially important if you have children, because although many people do not realize it, Siamese cats tend to be very particular and definitely have a different temperament than any other breed of cat in the world.

Siamese Cat Behavior

When it comes to Siamese cat behavior, one of the first and most important things to know is that Siamese cats tend to be very jealous and often so much to the point that they will throw tantrums or fits of bad behavior whenever they feel this jealousy.

Siamese cats often make noises so that you will notice them, and they want to keep your attention. They have a very faithful devotion to their owner, particularly when the owner has raised and been with them since birth. Jealously then tends to arise when the owner is paying attention to someone else or another cat, and this is when the Siamese cat may begin acting jealous and angry.

Also in regards to Siamese cat behavior, these cats have a heat-sensitive gene, and Siamese cats that live in warmer regions tend to have paler colored coats. You should always keep your Siamese cat active, as they like to walk around and get a lot of playtime in.

Correct Bad Behavior

Although Siamese cat behavior is often regarded as bad and many people are not willing to have such a cat as a pet. There are ways to correct this bad behavior however, and unlike dogs, cats do not need obedience training in order to develop good manners.

One of the most important things to do if you are trying to correct a cat’s bad behavior is to provide them with plenty of petting and affection. This will help to decrease their feelings of loneliness and make them feel more wanted. All cats love affection and so you can really never show them too much love.

Another great tip is to place obstructions on areas in your home that you do not want your cat jumping up on and make sure to say no to them firmly when they do something wrong. If you do have children in the home, and especially if you got the cat when they were older rather than as a kitten, you want to make sure that you have the cat trained and obedient before introducing them to the children, for safety reasons.

siamese cat

Siamese Cat: An Intelligent And Unique Looking Cat

For long, cats have made ideal companions to us humans and in the olden times they served the important purpose in keeping away household pests, though in modern times, they are admired for their intelligence and also because they don’t require much maintenance as well as for the warmth of their personalities. Though many popular breeds of cats are known to us, the Siamese cat is perhaps the most popular and also most widely recognized.

Originally From Southeast Asia

The origins of the Siamese cat can be traced to Southeast Asia though it is not known for sure where exactly they originated from in those parts of the world, and it was only as recently as the twentieth century that the Siamese cat gained in popularity in the western world. Today, they are a very popular breed of cat and that is not at all surprising because of their appearance that is quite unique and also because they seem very stately as well.

In fact, the Siamese cat has a shape that can best is described as being streamlined, it has striking facial features, especially its almond shape to their eyes, and also it has very appealing and contrasting colors that make it look very distinctive and very different from other types of cat breeds. However, the Siamese cat is not all about being good to look at because they are also famous for their intelligence and also striking personality as well.

The Siamese cat is thought to be one of the most extroverted as well as social of all cats in the world and their personality is one of affection and warmth and they closely gel with their owners, which however does mean that they are not quite as independent as some other cats and they are also known to like staying indoors with their owner. Another feature of this breed of cat is that it has a very loud and distinctive as well as low pitch to its voice, and even though they are very intelligent, they don’t train all that easily.

There are some Siamese cats that will obey you though others, thanks to the inquisitiveness of their nature, may be more mischievous and will often scratch up your carpet, or even the scratching post of your expensive sofa.

You should also make it a point before buying your Siamese cat to source it from a breeder of good reputation which will ensure that it has pure bloodline and that it has already been properly inoculated, and also its physical as well as social abilities will be well developed.

savannah cat breed

Profile Of The Savannah Cat Breed

Cats are among the top animals preferred as pets by humans. Among the many cat breeds found in the world, the Savannah cat breed is one of the most recent ever developed. This cat breed is a cross between a domestic cat and a Serval, an African wild cat. The effect of the hybrid resulted in a beautiful cat that is quite large compared to other domestic cats.

What The Savannah Cat Breed Looks Like

The Savannah cat breed is characterized by either a light or grey colored coat with dark or black markings. The markings are civet-like and are all over the body of the cat in a definite pattern. The size of the Savannah cat breed depends on whether it is a first generation cat or after. The first generation cats are usually larger than the ones that come afterwards.

The markings on the Savannah cat breed are also called marbling and can have a variety of patterns. One thing that is usually consistent in this breed of cats is the tear marking on its face similar to that of the cheetah. These tear markings are always black and run from the inner corner of the cat’s eyes to the side of the cheeks near where the whiskers start. These tear markings help to reduce the glare of the sun and aid the cat in hunting during the day.

The Personality Of The Savannah Cat Breed

The Savannah cat breed is basically a friendly and outgoing breed of cat although human interaction and that of other animals need to be introduced early on to ensure that it will properly acclimatize to interaction as it grows. Most of the Savannah cat breed species are not afraid of water or dogs and are even said to enjoy immersing or playing in water.

They are more filial than other breeds of cats towards their human owners and are highly intelligent. They are known to follow their owners around the house or property and can learn to open all sorts of doors and containers, which need minding since they might learn to sneak out or get into trouble.

Brief History Of The Savannah Cat Breed

Its owner named the very first Savannah cat Savannah. Savannah was produced from breeding a Serval with an ordinary domestic cat. When Patrick Keeley, an avid fan of wild looking domestic cats, saw the offspring he purchased one and immediately sought ways to make the cat breed part of The International Cat Association. This was in 1986 and in 1996 the very first breed standards were outlined for the Savannah cat breed. The International Cat Association did not recognize the Savannah cat breed until the year 2000.

red point siamese cat

What Is A Red Point Siamese Cat?

Siamese cats are among the most recognizable breeds in the world. There are many variations of the Siamese cat but all of these have the distinguishing points, which are darker than the breed's base coat color. Among the many different kinds of Siamese breeds are the seal point, the blue point, chocolate point and lilac point. These four are the ones accepted by the traditional Siamese cats fanciers club. Other variations such as the red point Siamese cat and the tortoiseshell are not fully accepted in some clubs.

The Red Point Siamese Cat Variation

The red point Siamese cat is pretty much the same cat as other more traditional Siamese cats but instead of the dark chocolate or black points, they have red or orangey points. These non-traditional point patterns are only variations in color and do not affect the temperament or health of the red point Siamese cat.

These new breed of Siamese cats also have the same placements of their points, in the extremities like the ears, snout, lower legs and paws, tail and scrota in most males. They also have the same or similar blue colored almond shaped eyes as the traditional Siamese cats, but these newer breeds sport the modern bodies of Siamese cats instead of the traditional.

Background Of The Red Point Siamese Cat

In the year 1948 Dr. Nora Archer acquired a male red point Siamese cat which was a product of crossbreeding a seal point male and a domestic cat which was half Siamese. The first male red point Siamese cat was then bred with a seal point female, which resulted in a litter of a tortoiseshell female who then produced the first ever-female red point Siamese cat.

From then on, the history of the red point Siamese cats was made. Selective breeding resulted in perfecting the red point Siamese cat strain and eventually the breed was introduced to the general public. The recognition of the new breed of Siamese cats had a difficult time gaining admission to most certified clubs but has gathered many fans. Those who fancied the breed started their own club, which was eventually affiliated with the Governing Council of the Cat Fancy in 1967.

Today, many people have accepted the red point Siamese cat as a variation of the Siamese breed. The breed variation also has many followers who adore the different shades of red that can be achieved in the new breed.

potty training your cat

Tips For Potty Training Your Cat

If you’ve just gotten a brand new kitten, then you’re probably wondering how to go about potty training your cat. Don’t worry this is not a difficult process. As a general rule, most mother cats will potty train their kittens before they are completely weaned. If this is your case, then you will have a much easier time potty training your cat. If not you can still have your cat trained to use a litter box within just a day or two. Just follow the simple steps below, and soon you’ll have a litter box to clean instead of the floor.

Potty Training Basics

The first thing you will need to do before potty training your cat, is to buy a litter box that is suitable for a kitten. A good litter box should be made of hard plastic, and should have a low enough lip on it that your small kitten can still get inside. If you are unable to find a litter box that has a low enough lip for you kitten, it is recommended that you place a phone book beside the litter box, for your kitten to use as a stool.

The second most important part of potty training your cat is that litter you choose. There are two basic types of cat litter – clumping and non-clumping. Both types are equally effective, and it is entirely up to you, which one you use. We preferred the clumping type of cat litter, as it was much easier to keep the litter box clean. But the choice is up to you which to use when potty training your cat.

Fill the litter box you have chosen for potty training your cat with about two inches of sand. Or, if the litter box is not high enough for two inches, a good rule of thumb is to fill the litter box about a third of the way full with cat litter. Also be sure that you have a good, quality scoop to use for cleaning out the clumps of soiled litter and feces. These scoops are typically sold right next to the litter boxes in most stores.

The last step to potty training your cat is to be sure to place your kitten inside the litter box directly after he or she has eaten. This is typically when most kittens will need to use the bathroom, and so is the best time to show them where to go. It is recommended by the experts that you take and lightly scratch the surface of the sand the first couple of times you place your kitten in the box. Since cats will naturally dig and cover their waste in the wild this is usually enough to get their instincts to kick in when you are potty training your cat.

persian cat breeders

What To Look For In Persian Cat Breeders

Persian cats are one of the most sought after breeds of cats. This is most likely because of their beautiful and regal appearance along with the many different colors that they come in. These cats are so sought after that there are many Persian cat breeders in the United States of America and the world. The demand for these beautiful animals has sparked intense need which many Persian cat breeders are scrambling to fill.

Due to the high demand, many kitten mills have sprouted to produce inferior quality cats. Not all Persian cat breeders are reputable and you need to be aware that kitten mills can be a cruel place for cats. Some Persian cat breeders do not consider the health of the female cat that produces the kittens and in most cases; they are over used and constantly pregnant. This can take a toll on the female and also on the health of the kittens as well.

Kitten mills also use related breeding pairs which means that the gene pool is over used and can produce deformities or abnormalities in the offspring. Related offspring and parents can also result to internal abnormalities which are not evident to the naked eye.

Better Persian Cat Breeders

If you wish to buy a Persian cat, it is best to buy from reputable breeders or adopt an adult from a shelter. Most shelters have already done tests on the animals in their care and they usually recommend healthy and well adjusted cats for adoption. If you wish to get a kitten from Persian cat breeders, you must consider some factors when considering the breeder.

Make sure that the Persian cat breeders you are talking to know their cats and are not just random breeders that operate kitten mills. It is sad to say that most kittens from less than reputable pet shops may come from kitten mills. It is better to buy from Persian cat breeders that are recommended by friends or really have breeding business.

All responsible breeders of animals must also have love for their animals. This will be evident in the way they handle the animals that they are selling and their care for them. Their passion for the cat breed will show along with their pride when they show the kittens.

Look at the condition of the parents or mother of the litter to see her condition. Some disreputable Persian cat breeders do not care much for the mother and let her condition slide. It is best to ask to see the mom before any purchase.

Searching for the right Persian cat breeders to consider when you buy a kitten may be difficult especially if you wish to settle for cats that are produce from cat farms. Some Persian cat breeders sell their cats at high prices compared to those from the cat farms but you are guaranteed of a pedigree and good health when you buy from reputable Persian cat breeders.

persian cat

The Persian Cat Is A Sweet And Gentle, And Somewhat Vein Type Of Cat

There no doubts the popularity of the Persian cat in modern times and because such a cat is well known for its sweet and also gentle personality, and of course, for its long hair it has the power of being very attractive to most people. Also, the Persian cat is a cat that is blessed with many features that add to its attractiveness and this type of cat is also an excellent companion for almost every cat owner while it also does not make many demands of the owner.

Mostly White In Color

The Persian cat is generally white in color and this is how they it is generally perceived though they are also found in a number of different colors, and are mostly divided into seven color divisions when it comes to competitions, and these are solid, gold and silver, tabby, smoke and shaded, bicolor, particolor and also Himalayan. But, what stands out with regard to the Persian cat is not its color, but its long hair that flows beautifully on its body.

If you have a Persian cat as a pet, you should ensure that it is kept indoors as that will ensure that its coat is protected since, in the outdoors, there is a lot of chance of the coat becoming damaged. The Persian cat also requires a lot of maintenance and so you must comb it on a daily basis while using a metal comb; otherwise, the coat is liable to get tangled and thus will form hairballs.

Bathing the Persian cat is also necessary and should be performed regularly which will give its coat much needed protection and it is best to bathe your Persian cat when it is still young, because it will then get used to this activity. The Persian cat is also one cat that does not maintain its own coat and since it has long as also dense fur, it requires grooming on a daily basis to keep the coat healthy.

The temperament of the Persian cat is mainly sweet and gentle and it is a cat that can get along with all kinds of people and it is also good with kids. It is also blessed with a voice that is pleasant and most people will readily like to hear its voice, and in fact, its eyes and voice are excellent tools with which it communicates with owners. In addition, the Persian cat is playful by nature and it is also not an attention grabber though it will revel in attention, and they are quite vein and like to be admired. It also differs from other cats by not being a cat that likes to jump or climb and there is also no destructive streak in them, since they like it the most when being admired, or when simply lying about the home.

non shedding cat breeds

What are the Non Shedding Cat Breeds?

If you are interested in non shedding cat breeds because you would like to have a cat as a pet but are not interested in having to follow them around cleaning up cat fur, then there are a few different breeds that you can choose from.

Non Shedding Cat Breeds

When it comes to non shedding cat breeds, one of the most popular is the Cornix Rex. They are definitely very unique looking cats because they do not have any fur at all, or at least their coat is so short that it is almost as though they have none at all.

The coat is incredibly close to the body and soft to the touch, prompting comparisons to cut velvet, rabbit fur or silk. This breed of cat also has a very distinctive head and body type, featuring rather large ears which are set high on a smaller egg-shaped head. They have very high cheekbones and hollow cheeks, and a body with an arched back and very long, fine legs.

In terms of personality they are very mild-mannered pets, and they are extremely affectionate and people-oriented. They have a very elegant appearance but are always friendly and even great with children. It is important to remember however that although this is one of the most popular non shedding cat breeds, and because it does not shed, it is still not necessarily hypoallergenic.

Therefore if you have allergies to cat fur your allergies still may be irritated by the Cornix Rex cat even though they barely have any fur at all.

Another of the most popular non shedding cat breeds is the Devon Rex. Similar to the Cornix Rex, this breed of cat has a body that is suited in a coat of loose waves and curls, unusual features that decorate a breed whose personality and friendliness are as unique as the package that they come in.

It is definitely one of the favored cat breeds, and they tend to average anywhere from six to nine pounds. The coat varies greatly from one cat to another, and can range from an almost shaggy mop of loose curls to a thin almost suede-like coat in others that may even leave some of their areas nearly bare.

Having a pet cat that does not shed can be truly divine, as not only are they better for people with allergies but as well they do not mess up your house with clumps of fur.

minx breed cat

The Myth Of The Minx Breed Cat

The minx breed cat is a source of confusion not only among cat lovers, but among other people as well. Though the term “minx breed cat” is commonly used on the internet and in everyday conversation, the truth is that it is not actually a real cat breed! In reality, there is no such thing as a minx breed cat. The term refers to a commonly found crossbreed between two other types of cats.

Manx Plus Sphinx Equals Minx

The term “minx breed cat” generally refers to a first generation hybrid cat breed. The two kinds of cats that comprise the minx breed cat are the Manx cat and the sphinx cat. When these two cats breed, the product is a very unique animal. So unique, in fact, that people felt the need to make up a name for it!

The Manx—One Part Of The Whole

The Manx cat is very distinctive in its characteristics and its appearance. It is though to have originated on the Isle of Man, off the coast of England. Perhaps one of the qualities the breed is most known for being tailless. In fact, because the tailless gene is dominant, it is possible for one litter of kittens to contain kittens with tails, kittens without tails, kittens with short tails, and kittens with stumps.

Manx cats are very round in appearance, and the breed can have either long hair or short hair. This type of cat has a very sweet expression and is known for being very playful.

Part Two—The Sphinx

The made up “minx breed cat” is comprised not only of the Manx cat, but the Sphinx cat as well. The Sphinx breed is actually a mutation, and it was first discovered in 1966. The most distinctive character of the Sphinx cat is its hairlessness. Sphinx cats are also known for being very healthy, strong, and robust.

The Sphinx breed is very rare due to its being a mutation. These kinds of cats can be all different colors, and they love to be the center of attention.

A Cute Combo

Although the term “minx cat” is incorrectly used, it has come to refer to a very particular and attractive breed combination. While continued use of the term might lead people to believe that it is in fact the scientific name of an actual cat, there is no doubt that it refers to a cat hybrid that is rare, distinctive, and unique.

long haired cat breeds

The Different Long Haired Cat Breeds

There are quite a few different long haired cat breeds that you can choose from, and long haired cat breeds are actually the favored of all cats, primarily because of their beautiful long coats and attractive appearance.

The Most Popular Long Haired Cat Breeds

Although there are literally hundreds of different long haired cat breeds to choose from, there are a few that are especially popular. One is the Persian cat. This is actually one of the oldest breeds of cats in the world, and definitely one of the most popular.

They are incredibly friendly and even great with children. The breed is thought to have originated in Persia, which is where it got its name from, and today it is easily one of the most recognized and highly sought after. Persian cats typically have very long and soft hair, a strong and cobby build, chubby cheeks and a high nose.

They are well known for their temperament and make wonderful family pets. They are considered as being the most calm and docile of all cat breeds and they are incredibly loving and affectionate.

They are also very easy to groom even though they have long hair, and they require very frequent grooming. You have to be willing to do daily brushing and give your cat a bath at least once a month. Otherwise, their fur is going to end up getting knotted and tatty, and also remember that they should always be kept indoors.

Another of the most popular long haired cat breeds is the Balinese. They look very similar to the Siamese cat only their fur is much longer. They are actually known as being the long haired cousin to the Siamese and as a breed they combine the effortless grace and fine lines of the Siamese breed with a long, beautiful silky coat.

Whichever type of cat you choose, the most important thing is that you are able and willing to give them a lot of attention and love, because this is what all cats are looking for. Cats are always attention seekers and want to get lots of petting and attention. If you are not going to be able to devote enough time to your pet then you should consider getting another type of animal as a pet.

Also, if you have allergies rather than a long haired feline friend you may prefer to get a short haired or even bald cat, to make sure that your allergies will not be aggravated.

largest domestic cat breed

What’s The Largest Domestic Cat Breed? Might Be The Maine Coon

Cat owners or people who are looking to buy a cat have different requirements depending on their life styles and preferences. For those people who live in a small apartment, smaller cats might be the best option. For people who have young children, their ideal cat might have a cheery disposition. People who work all day most likely will want an outdoor cat instead of an indoor pet. For those pet owners who are looking for the largest domestic cat breed, the Maine Coon is the way to go!

Mysterious Origins

There are many myths surrounding the origins of the largest domestic cat breed, the Maine Coon. One known fact is that the cat is a native of the state of Maine. One widespread tale, which has been disproved, is that the Maine Coon is the byproduct of a semi wild, domestic cat and a raccoon. This myth, which has long been fueled by the cat’s bushy tale and raccoon-like coloring, is the reason for the name “Maine Coon.”

Another theory commonly associated with the emergence of the largest domestic cat breed is that the Maine Coon came from the six cats sent to Wiscasset, Maine by Marie Antoinette during the French Revolution. While this theory has never been completely disregarded, the most commonly accepted belief today is that the Maine Coon breed is the offspring of shorthaired domestic cats and overseas longhairs. These longhairs may have been brought to the United States by the Vikings or New England Seamen.

An Appearance To Remember

The Maine Coon is known for being the largest domestic cat breed. Indeed, a widespread legend is that the Maine Coon is over 30 pounds! This is untrue (unless the cat is morbidly obese), but this large domestic cat is very tall and muscular with big bones. The male cat typically weight between 13 to 18 pounds, while the female weighs 9 to 12 pounds. With the addition of the cat’s thick coat of fur, it is no wonder that it is known for being the largest domestic cat breed!

All of its physical characteristics leave the Maine Coon well-equipped for outdoor survival; its thick, water resistant coat is perfect for the harsh Maine climate. Their eyes and ears are specially designed to provide ample sight and hearing ability. Their feet are large, round, and tufted to help them walk through the snow.

The Mew Of A Kitten From The Mouth of A Lion

Despite their large (and perhaps intimidating) appearance, the Maine Coon is a very gentle cat with a sweet disposition. Although they are the largest domestic cat breed, they make great pets for anyone looking for a furry feline friend!

large domestic cat breeds

Large Domestic Cat Breeds that make Great Family Pets

In the world of cats, there are good-natured varieties and more feisty breeds. There is also a great diversity in terms of sizes, shapes and colors. For some families that are on the hunt for a cat as a family pet, the idea of a larger cat is an attractive one. There are many large domestic cat breeds that can make enjoyable pets for a number of reasons. Three of the most popular large domestic cat breeds are the Maine Coon, the Ragamuffin and the Siberian.

The Maine Coon

This large domestic cat breed is known as the original American long-haired cat, and is a popular choice of pets for many families today. This cat was esteemed in the state of Maine, where it originated, for its superb mousing abilities. Maine Coons are also considered to be affectionate, easy going and intelligent creatures. Their coats are on the longer side and can come in a large array of colors and patterns. The average weight of this large domestic cat breed is 13 to 20 pounds for an adult male cat and 7 to 11 pounds for a female.

The Ragamuffin

Ragamuffins are an impressive large domestic cat breed with long, luxurious coats and a noticeable size. Although the hair tends to be medium length, there is very little grooming maintenance required for this cat, since the hair does not clump easily. Females of this breed can average from 10 to 15 pounds, and males weighing in anywhere from 15 to 20 pounds. Despite their large size, this cat is extremely docile and affectionate, and should be kept as an indoor cat for its own protection.

The Siberian

The Siberian is a large domestic cat breed that was first imported to the United States in the year 1990. Although it has been popular in other countries for generations, it is a relatively new breed of cat to this country, and is still a rather rare find. The Siberian has a semi-long coat in the winter, which shortens to a medium length during the summer months. This cat can be quite loyal to his owners, and some will even greet you at the door when you come home or come to you when you call him. This makes the Siberian a large domestic cat breed that can make a good companion for individuals and families alike.

There are many beautiful large domestic cat breeds that you can choose from if you are considering the addition of a cat to your family. If you need further information about the breeds available, you can contact your veterinarian or the Cat Fancier’s Association.

history of siamese cats

Standard And History Of Siamese Cats

Siamese cats are one of the most recognizable cats in the world. They are also very popular pets and are believed to be an old breed coming from Asia. The history of Siamese cats is not as clear as we would like it to be but there are some fragments of it in the annals of time.

The history of Siamese cats is based in Thailand, which was formerly known as Siam. It is believed that these cats were native to the area and a breeding pair was brought from Siam to the United Kingdom in the year 1884 as a gift. This is as far as the history of Siamese cats goes, although there are some manuscripts in Russia that illustrate cats with similar traits as the Siamese.

In the history of Siamese cats, many legends abound as to why the original cats had a kink in its tail. Today, not all Siamese cats have this distinctive kink and it is even discouraged in shows. There are now two variations of the Siamese cats, the traditional cat and the modern cat. The difference between the two is that the modern cats are more svelte than the traditional cats and sport longer, thinner bodies and legs.

Breed Standard

The traditional Siamese cats have long gone from the show ring so it is usually the modern versions that continually show up in shows. In spite of this, many traditional Siamese cat breeders would like the old style cats to return to the ring. The standards for modern Siamese cats are that the base color of the coat is usually a creamy color with darker points in the snout, all four paws, points of the tail and ears and in males cats the scrota. In the history of Siamese cats, the cats have always had their darker fur in these areas.

Almost all Siamese cats accepted for shows and as registered members of The International Cat Association have blue eyes, which are almond shaped. Their coats are flat and lie close to the skin. The history of Siamese cats has also shown that the original cats might have a strong tendency to be cross-eyed and have a kink n their tails. These traits were eradicated in the pursuit of a perfect Siamese cat breed.

The breed is known to be highly intelligent and very affectionate with people. They tend to bond well with humans and are very loyal to their owners. This cat breed is seldom active at night and can be quite vocal with it needs and desires.

grey siamese cat

Variations Of Grey Siamese Cats

Cats are among the top pets that humans love to keep. Among the many various breeds of cats in the world, the Siamese cat is one of the most popular. There are several kinds of Siamese cats and they are usually differentiated by the color of their points. Siamese cats have an old history in which they are supposed to be guardians of a traditional temple or were exclusively kept by members of royalty in Siam.

Standard Of Siamese Cats

Show standards of Siamese cats indicate that the cats must come in just four colors, seal, or extremely dark points, blue or cool grey Siamese cats points, chocolate points and lilac which are pale warm grey Siamese cats. All cats must have points or darker coloring in their extremities, namely the paws and lower legs, ears, snout, tail and in males, the scrota.

All Siamese cats must have almond shaped blue eyes and a creamy light colored base for their coats. In the earlier traditional breeds of Siamese cats, they had kinks in their tails and often had a cross-eyed appearance. Selective breeding soon got rid of the supposed imperfection although some die hard fans of the traditional Siamese cats have retained some breeds with the kinks and the cross-eyed looks. Fanciers of the traditional Siamese cats believe in keeping the traditional traits from Siam.

Why Are There Grey Siamese Cats?

The two kinds of grey Siamese cats are actually just variations in point colors. The blue or cool grey Siamese cats and the lilac or the warm grey Siamese cats are actually diluted versions of the seal point and the chocolate. These grey Siamese cats versions are lighter versions of the darker colored ones. Adult Siamese cats also tend to develop darker coats, as they grow older. In warmer climates, Siamese cats have lighter colored coats that those in colder climates which sometimes show grey Siamese cats.

Other than the varying colors of their coats, grey Siamese cats have little differences from their lighter colored younger counterparts in the warmer regions. The result of having grey Siamese cats may have something to do with the albinism effect of the points in the cats. Science has explained that the points of Siamese cats are the results of the extremities being the coldest areas of the cat. In colder regions, older coats tend to turn into darker or grey Siamese cats because they feel colder all over their bodies instead of the usual points.

exotic cat breeds

What Are Exotic Cat Breeds?

There are actually two kinds of definitions when you refer to exotic cat breeds. The first would lead you to several breeds of cats which are mostly hybrid cat breeds produced from wildcats. The other definition of exotic cat breeds will also point to a certain breed of cat that is a cross between the Persian cat and the American shorthair. They have the physical attributes of Persian cats but lack the long hair that Persians are known for.

Shorthaired Persians

The exotic cat breeds that depict shorthaired Persians were produced in the sixties. They do not have the Persians long hair but they also do not have the flat hair of most shorthaired cats. Their hair is mostly a dense, fluffy coat of erect hair that is somewhat longer than most other shorthaired breeds. This exotic cat breed has a very broad and massive skull that is proportionate to its body.

The temperament of exotic cat breeds is very sweet and calm. They are more lively then Persians and very rarely make much noise unless aggravated. They are very loyal to their masters and exhibit excellent companion cat characteristics. They can maintain their fur well on their own but might need regular brushing.

Hybrid Cats

Hybrid cat breeds or exotic cat breeds are those breeds that have been crossed with wildcats. Some of these exotic cat breeds are fairly new while others are among the most ancient. The Bengal cat is one of the few exotic cat breeds in the world that is recognized by The International Cat Association. It is a combination of the Asian Leopard Cat and domestic cat. Another cat that has wildcat in its genes is the Safari cat that is a cross between a domestic cat and the Geoffroys cat. The breed was initially started in the seventies but restrictions made it extinct. It was recently revived and has received much acclaim.

The Savannah is another of the exotic cat breeds. It is a cross between the African Serval and domestic cat. These are among the largest domestic cat breeds in the world. The breed also comes in several generations and sizes and personalities vary in each generation.

The Habari is a more recent addition to exotic cat breeds. The breed is unique in the sense that it was developed as a pet and they are a combination of wildcats' genes and other hybrids. Egyptian Maus are among the oldest domestic cats in the world and they are classified as an exotic cat breed because they have characteristics that place them as wildcats.

These breeds of cats are all very beautiful and many people get them for their beauty and the uniqueness. The fact that most of the breeds featured here are from wildcats also help to make the cats sought after for those who wish to have a wildcat presence in the home.

domestic cat breeds

Domestic Cat Breeds: The Maine Coot

Among the several different types of domestic cat breeds, the Maine Coot is one that is well liked and it also happens to be among the larger of such domestic cat breeds which are also very intelligent and also playful, while also having a very unique physical appearance as well. The Maine Coot is among the oldest domestic cat breeds in North America though it is originally from New England and so is America’s very own first indigenous show cat, and it is many times also referred to as a ‘gentle giant’ and by nature it is very pleasant.

Big And Full Of Energy

This domestic cat breed is quite a big animal and it is also full of energy and it may even weigh as many as twelve kilograms at the most, while the average weight for the Maine Coot is about between six and nine kilograms for the adult male, while the females weigh about half as much as the males. In fact, the male Maine Coot is known to have grown to as many as one meter in its length, though the longest known Maine Coot is a bit longer than that as well.

This domestic cat breed has a square muzzle on its face and the neck is thick while ears are large and also it has eyes that are big as well as rounded, while the body is also large and a bit muscular as well, and its tail is also quite long and it is also quite bushy as well. The origins of this domestic cat breed is surrounded by myths though the truth is rather boring because it may be attributed to the bringing of cats to the new lands from Europe, which had to survive the harsh winters in places such as New England, and thus there were only the strong and adaptable of those cats that survived. The Maine Coot thus survived through natural selection and became rugged and large and its coat was resistant to water and it also has a constitution that is robust and strong.

Another feature of this domestic cat breed is that it is a very social creature and it is also a cat that will get along with different cats, and even dogs as well as with children, and they have excellent personalities and so they make for an ideal cat breed to have around the home. And, being so intelligent, they are also very easy to train.

choosing a cat breed

Choosing A Cat Breed For Your Family

Pets are great to have in the home. They complete a home very well and they also bring fun and laughter in one. Cats are among the very first animals considered as a pet all over the world. Choosing a cat breed that best suit your family will be difficult because thee are many breeds to choose from and there are many factors to consider. It is best to involve al members of your family in choosing a cat breed to bring into your home and family.

Factors To Consider In Choosing A Cat Breed

One of the many factors that you need to consider when choosing a cat breed for your pet is the size of your apartment or home. Although cats leave an impression of always sleeping or lounging around, some are actually very active and need lots of room to exercise and play. Some breeds are the stereotyped ones that actually just laze around but not all are like this. If an active cat is left to its own devices in a small area, it might do some damage to furniture and other things in the house when it is bored.

One other thing to consider in choosing a cat breed for your family is the amount of time your family can spare to take care of your cat. Longhair cats need regular grooming, which involves bathing, drying and brushing. If you are too busy to facilitate these things, get a shorthair cat.

The health of your family must also be considered when choosing a cat breed. Some longhair varieties shed their fur and dander frequently and these may cause some allergic reactions to you and your family. On the other hand, there is a particular breed of cat that some people claim is hypoallergenic.

Another factor to consider when choosing a cat breed for your home is the expense of feeding and grooming the cat. Cat food can be expensive and grooming services for longhairs can also be expensive, as with veterinarian services. Feeding your cat leftovers can be dangerous because some foods can be deadly for cats.

The personality and temperament of the cat must also be considered when choosing a cat breed. It is better to first get to know the temperament of cat breeds before you adopt or purchase one. Some cat breeds do not like to be treated as lap pets while others relish this. Others also prefer to stay outdoors while others are best kept indoors. Some might also have some inherent sickness like deafness in white cats.

In choosing a cat breed, it is best to scout around first and not base your judgment solely in physical appearance. It would also be helpful to adopt cats instead of buy kittens since many full grown cats now show their personalities and you are getting what you get.

cat training tips

The Best Cat Training Tips

If you have a cat and want to teach them good behavior, then at least you can rest assured in knowing that training a cat is usually a lot easier than training a dog. Cats do not require obedience classes and instead you can usually teach them what you want in a matter of a few days.

Cat Training Tips

One of the best cat training tips is to remember that reprimands do not work. For instance if you find that your cat is not using the cat litter box properly and are making a mess around the house, rather than showing the cat the evidence and disciplining them at that time, you need to focus more on letting them know that they can get rewards from doing their business in the right place.

Another of the most important cat training tips involves the eating of house plants. Not only does this get annoying when you are trying to keep beautiful plants around the house, but as well it can be dangerous to your cat’s health. Eating plants is an exceedingly dangerous habit, as many household plants are poisonous and can even possibly kill your beloved pet.

The most important thing to remember here is that if your cat loves to munch on the greenery around your home, you should not deny them this pleasure. Instead, make them their very own little kitty garden. You can find some great commercially available herb gardens that are perfect for this purpose, and this way they will have their own plants to munch on.

If socialization is the problem with your cat, then one of the most valuable cat training tips is quite simple, and just involves giving your cat more attention. The main reason that a cat grows up to be timid or shy is because they were not given enough love growing up. You can socialize a cat by playing with them for at least a couple hours a day and by grooming them on a regular basis.

There are many other cat training tips that you can use to help your cat and make them healthy and happy. Just remember to never get frustrated with your pet, but rather have patience and work with them until you get the results that you are looking for. Cats make wonderful pets and can be trained quite easily as long as you are willing to put a bit of time and effort into the process.

cat training aids

Cat Training Aids To Teach Your Furry Friend To Behave

Cats are notorious for being stubborn and thickheaded. Perhaps that is just one of the many reasons that cat lovers generally can be spotted from a mile away with their fur covered clothing and furniture. But teaching your beloved kitty good manners doesn’t have to be a chore. There are several cat training aids available on the market, which will allow you to train your cat exactly where he or she is allowed to go and to help keep your home, and your sanity, intact.

Aside from commercial cat training aids, which can be found in a wide variety of places, there are many things right in your own home that can be used to teach your kitty some manners. Most of these, if not already owned, can be found in any discount store and can save you thousands on shredded furniture and broken dishes.

Stop Them From Scratching

If your cat has an issue with tearing up your walls and furniture, as cats often do, there are a number of products widely available that you can use to protect your home. These cat training aids are relatively inexpensive, as well. But, in the meantime, it is still possible to protect your home, and keep kitty from tearing anything else up, until you are able to purchase those items.

The very first training aid that most people will overlook right in their own home is bubble wrap. Until you are able to purchase the hard plastic cat training aids that fit directly onto the corners of your sofa, you can take bubble wrap and cover these areas with it. This also works on many other surfaces, too.

The first time your cat hooks his or her claws into the bubble wrap, the sound alone should keep them from coming back to that spot. However, it is a good idea to purchase the plastic cat training aids as soon as possible, because once you take the bubble wrap off, cats will generally come back to the same spot they clawed before.

Get Off My Counters!

One of cat owners’ biggest concerns, however, is the fact that their furry friend will not stay off of the kitchen counters, resulting in cat hair in dishes and food. Yuck! But don’t worry, there are plenty of cat training aids to assist with this problem, as well.

In the meantime, however, there are a few things you can do to prevent Fluffy from jumping up there, or at least from staying on the counters for very long. To begin with, remember the old saying that duct tape fixes everything? Well, in the case of temporarily replacing cat training aids, it is certainly true.

To stop your cat from jumping up on your counters until you are able to purchase more permanent cat training aids, place a few strips of duct tape, sticky side up, onto your counter. Place three or four long strips onto the counter your cat most uses, and place them about three inches apart, so as to cover a larger space.

These are only temporary cat training aids, and should only be used until you are able to purchase permanent cat training aids. Remember, these aids are inexpensive, and can save you thousands on property your cat might otherwise destroy.

cat training

Cat Training: No Hitting, And Rewarding Good Behavior Are Recommended

Cats are by nature very intelligent and can also be taken care of without much difficulty and thus they make for pets that are very rewarding. So, if you are interested in cat training, then all you need to do is to know the proper methods that should be employed, and the first step in cat training should obviously be to teach the cat to learn its name and respond to it, and thus it is necessary to give it repeated lessons in order that it learns to recognize and respond to its name.

Give It Something To Scratch Upon

There are many needs that the cat requires including satisfying its feed and thirst requirements, and also they should be given a place where they can strop their claws, and they also need toys and other items that will keep them interested in them. Not including a scratching post in the cat training exercise will mean that the cat won’t have any other alternative than to sharpen its claws on whatever comes in its way including your expensive sofa, or carpet, or anything else it finds that it likes to scratch.

You also need to take into account in your cat training program, the need for cats to play with things and even chews on them, and thus it is necessary to provide them with toys and the like which it can play and chew on without destroying your slippers, and even the cushions will be safe from damage.

Cat training however should not mean giving your cat a beating or hitting it, which will only make the cat afraid and in any case the cat cannot correlate the hitting with misbehavior. All that you need to do to let the cat know it is doing something wrong is to firmly say ‘no’ or you can even clap your hands to let it know that its actions are inappropriate. No doubt, the cat still cannot understand your words, though it will understand the harshness of your tone, which will make it realize it is doing something wrong.

Another means you can employ in cat training is to use a water sprayer on the cat’s face whenever it has done something wrong, and in fact a number of cats even will like this, while for others a loud noise like clapping your hands will suffice to let the cat know about its misbehavior. However, sometimes the cat does things which are nice and pleasant and thus you must include giving of rewards in your cat training since in that way it can correlate good actions with treat, and will thus stay positive more often than not.

cat toilet training

Cat Toilet Training Basics

If you are looking for cat toilet training tips, then you have definitely come to the right place. There has long been speculation over whether or not it is even possible to toilet train a cat. But as cat owners grow more and more weary of cleaning litter boxes, more and more devices and methods for cat toilet training have been put into practice.

There are many different books available that discuss detailed techniques for cat toilet training. But here, we have attempted to give you a basic overview of how the actual process is accomplished. It is important to remember that individual results will vary according to how much time you are willing to spend on cat toilet training, as well as on each individual cat.

The Method

There are a few essential items you will have to have on hand before cat toilet training can begin: your cat’s current litter box, a stool roughly the same height as your toilet, and a bowl that will fit inside your toilet bowl. The first step in cat toilet training is always to first place your cat’s current litter box beside the toilet. Give him or her a few days to adjust to the new location.

Once your cat has gotten used to his or her box being in the bathroom, cat toilet training can really begin. The second step in this process is to get your cat accustomed to jumping up to the height of the toilet seat. This is accomplished by placing the cat’s litter box on a stool next to the toilet. Be sure that for the first day or two the lid of the toilet is left down. After a day or so of your cat jumping up to get in the litter box, you can lift the lid (but leave the seat down), so that your cat can get used to navigating his or her way around the seat.

The third step in the cat toilet training process is to move the cat’s litter box to the top of the toilet for a day or so. This accustoms your cat to actually being on the toilet, as opposed to beside it. After a day or so of this, remove the litter box completely, and replace it with a bowl filled with litter, on the inside of the toilet bowl. Be sure to watch your cat to make certain that he or she is placing their feet on the seat of the toilet, as opposed to inside the bowl.

Once your cat is placing all four of his or her feet on the seat of the toilet, instead of inside the bowl, you can complete the very last step in cat toilet training – removing the bowl. Once you have done this, as long as there are no litter boxes elsewhere in your home, you should have completely finished the cat toilet training process.

cat potty training

Don’t Go There! The Ins And Outs Of Cat Potty Training

Ahh, cats. Those sweet and delicate creatures that bless us with their furry cuteness and affection. Yeah, right. Cats are one of the most beloved pets in society today, but it certainly is not for their overt sense of affection. Rather, it is because, for the most part, cats are very self-sufficient. And it is this ability to look after themselves that makes them so desirable. Typically, their self-reliance training also includes the basics of cat potty training.

As a general rule, the majority of cat potty training is taken care of by the mother cat before the kittens are even weaned. However, once in a while we find ourselves faced with a sweet little creature that hasn’t got a clue where to go. Literally. In these cases, it is necessary to teach cat potty training by oneself. This isn’t a difficult process, and can generally be accomplished in just a few days.

Step One – The Box

If you have to start cat potty training on your own, the first thing you will have to do is to choose the right box. For kittens, a box with a low lip is preferred. This is so that the kittens have an easier time getting in and out. Buy a box with too high a lip, and you may find that your new friend goes on the floor just out of sheer frustration.

Older cat potty training will not require you to get such a low-lipped box. In fact, many older cats prefer a higher-lipped box, so that they can get a sense of privacy. Older cats may also prefer litter boxes that are enclosed. These enclosed boxes are relatively easy to find, and their covers snap on and off for easy cleaning.

Step Two – The Sand

The type of sand you purchase for cat potty training is entirely up to you. There are only two types to choose from – clumping and original. Both work fine, but the clumping style of litter is much easier to clean.

Once you have filled your cat’s litter box about a third of the way full with sand, you will need to show him or her what to do. Not literally, of course, but by placing your kitten or older cat into the litter box immediately after they have finished eating. This is typically when kittens will need to eliminate, and so is the best time to place them in the box.

Cat potty training is a relatively simple process. Once you have shown your new friend a time or two where he or she is supposed to toilet, you will generally find they are quite willing to continue without any additional instruction. If your older cat continues to eliminate elsewhere, you may want to take them to see a vet, as it could be a sign of something more serious.

cat breeds

Cat Breeds: From Self Breeding To Breeding To Suit Man’s Own Desires

The association between cats and man goes back for many thousands of years, though in modern times, cats are the number two most favored type of pet in the world today. The beauty of keeping a cat for a pet is that you can leave it in the home and go out for work, study or do other tasks and the cat will not require much supervision in your absence. All they need is to be fed and paid attention to and unlike dogs, don’t require being walked about or anything like that.

Not Pedigreed Cats

The majority of pet cats are not pedigreed cat breeds and often they are mixed breeds and it is believed that as few as three percent of all domestic cats are of a cat breed that is pure, though owning a purebred cat does not offer you any significant advantage over other types of cat breeds. In fact, from all across the globe, there are more than hundred different pure cat breeds.

Most cat breeds are different from one another in their body shapes, sizes as well as length of coat and also color of their eyes, and maybe even in their personality. Of all the different cat breeds, there are two major categories which are short hair and long hair and the short hair cats are the most common of all cat breeds.

Most cat owners may not prefer to own long hair cats because they are more difficult to care for since they need to be groomed on a daily basis and they also are more at risk of having hairballs from which fleas may be very difficult to get rid of, and in case such cats get them cut or are grazed, it will be quite difficult to properly care for them.

In any case, for thousands of years cats have bred themselves quite well and have evolved from being used for hunting as well as for eliminating rodents and now cat breeds are the product of human intervention and they are meant to suit mankind’s own needs. Thus, it should not surprise you to learn that at present there are as many as seventy different cat breeds that are recognized through many different cat registries.

Among the many registries, you will find some that recognize merely forty cat breeds and there are many variations to them as well. The roots of certain cat breeds go back all the way back to some thousand years ago to Japan though today these cats are more of myth not only in Japan, but in the rest of the world.

cat breed

The Five Most Popular Cat Breeds Today

Cat breeds can be as diverse and colorful as any other species of animal, and each type will come with its own unique look, characteristics and temperament. If you are thinking of adding a cat to your family, why not consider one of the most popular cat breeds today? There are plenty of gorgeous cats to choose from, but these five breeds have won over the hearts of more cat lovers than any others.

The Persian

It is no wonder why the Persian has been one of the most popular cat breeds for generations, with their beautiful thick coats and sweet, gentle dispositions. You can find Persians in a wide variety of colors, including black, grey, orange and the popular white. Persians originated in the country of their name, and are thought to go back at least as far as 1684 B.C., when hieroglyphics make reference to this animal.

The Siamese Cat

Siamese cats are another popular cat breed, and often the one that people think of most when they think felines. Siamese also come from the country of the same name, which is known as Thailand today. These cats have a very beautiful appearance and tend to be rather high maintenance creatures to own. They crave attention and will voice their displeasure when they don’t get enough with their distinct cries.

The Maine Coon Cat

The Maine Coon is an ancient breed that is highly adaptable to a wide variety of climates and environments. This cat breed is considered to be the original American long-hair cat, and continues to be a popular choice for cat lovers today. The playful and pleasant nature of these cats makes them a good choice for families, including those with small children.

The Ragdoll

The popularity of this breed is undoubtedly due as much to its laid-back nature as it is to its beauty. Ragdolls can be more like dogs than cats at times, running to the door to greet you when you come home or enjoying a rousing game of fetch. These cats have medium-length coats that need some grooming to keep them looking their best. This cat breed is another great choice as a family pet, as long as it will be kept indoors.

The Burmese

The Burmese is another cat breed that likes people, making it a good companion for individuals and families. This is a short-haired breed that requires little or no grooming maintenance on the part of the owner. Burmese can use their voices like a Siamese cat will, but their cries tend to be on the softer side.

burmese cat rescue

Burmese Cat Rescue Organizations Are Selective Saviors

Despite the large number of cat lovers in this world, many cats end up on the streets. This can lead to dreadful results for the animals—they could be injured, or worse. The grim prospects for Burmese cats and other cats have lead to the development of rescue groups for cats.

Yet, many cats continue to be killed in these shelters, including pure breeds. Thus, organizations such as Burmese cat rescue organizations have been established with the purpose of rescuing specific pure bred cats. These cats are kept until a safe home can be found for them.

Babying The Burmese

Although rescue groups can be found for many breeds, one of the most common is Burmese cat rescue groups. This is because of the Burmese cat’s personality. Burmese cats are known for being too trusting and for having barely any survival instinct. Thus, the role of Burmese cat rescue groups is extremely important.

A Safety Net

How do Burmese cat rescue organizations work? Well, they don’t rescue the cats themselves. The role of the organization’s volunteers is to travel the many animal shelters in the area in an attempt to identify Burmese cats (or whichever other breed they might be looking for) in order to save them from being killed.

Once they have identified a specific breed, they bring the cats with them until they can be adopted. Purebred cats, such as Burmese cats that have been rescued, are more likely to be adopted than mixed breeds. This is because many people seek to enter purebred cats in animal shows, and others simply like the prestige of saying that they own a purebred cat!

Recognizing The Rarity

The Burmese breed is fairly rare, but it can still be difficult to recognize this breed at times. Many confuse it with the Siamese cat breed, though it can be differentiated from this cat breed by its lighter color. It is important for members of Burmese cat rescue teams to be able to recognize the distinct characteristics of a Burmese cat.

Burmese cats are medium sized, but they manage to pack a substantial amount of weight onto their frames. They have round heads, full faces, and large eyes. Their tails are of medium length, and their coats are known for being satin-like, short and fine.

Perhaps what would most allow Burmese cat rescue organizations to recognize the breed are their distinct colors. There are four colors that the CFA recognizes for Burmese cats: champagne, blue, sable, and platinum.

Here, Kitty Kitty!

Rescuing Burmese cats is a noble cause. Without breed-specific rescue organizations like these, many more cats would lose their lives.

Burmese cat

The History Of The Burmese Cat

The Burmese cat is a wonderful breed of domesticated cat that was first discovered in the country of Thailand in the early eighteenth century, when they were transplanted to Burma. They were introduced into British society in 1871, by Harrison Weir and quickly gained in popularity. The Burmese breed wasn’t officially recognized as a true breed until 1936, when the Cat Fancier’s Association granted recognition of the Burmese as being separate and distinguishable from the Siamese cat.

Varieties Of The Burmese Cat

Interbred with the Siamese cat for many years, there are several different varieties of the Burmese cat. They range in color and size, as well as originating country. The most popular breed of the Burmese is the Traditional Burmese cat found in Britain. Also available is the American Contemporary Burmese, although many organizations and breeders do not recognize the American version as a true breed.

The most common colors of the Burmese cat are Sable, Blue, Chocolate, Lilac, Red Cream, and Tortoiseshell. Other colors not as common include Cinnamon, Fawn, and Caramel.

The American, contemporary Burmese cat is a stockier variety, whereas the Traditional Burmese found in Britain is considered to be a more “oriental” look. The traditional Burmese has a more triangular head, whereas the contemporary variety is classified as being more pug-like, with a rounder head, and a stockier build.

While the features of the contemporary Burmese cat have always been considered more desirable, the rounder shape of the head, and the stockier body are actually caused by a genetic defect. Many breeders of the contemporary variety are unconcerned, however, and maintain that the defect is only actually lethal in a small number of kittens born. These affected kittens are most always euthanized upon birth.

Cat Associations

The Burmese Cat Society of America was the most popular cat society dedicated solely to the breeding and continuation of the Burmese breed, and succeeded in gaining the breed Western recognition in 1953. The Burmese Cat Club, based in Britain, was founded a few years later in 1955. In 1979, The Burmese Cat Society of Britain was founded.

Each of these groups are affiliated with the Governing Council of the Cat Fancier, an organization based in the United Kingdom which acts as the governing force over the rules of pedigree cat breeding. Their involvement with the Burmese cat was first recorded in 1930, when Doctor Joseph Thompson imported a female into the United States.

The Burmese cat is a very loving breed, unlike the Siamese they so resemble. If you are interested in owning one of these lovely felines, talk to your local cat society today!

breeds of house cat

How to Choose from the Many Breeds of House Cats

Is it time for a new pet for your family? If the answer is yes, and if a cat is on your mind, there are plenty of breeds of house cats that you can choose from. And while you can go for a pet that will come with a pedigree, there are plenty of breeds of house cats that may not come with registration papers, but will make a wonderful family pet all the same. These types of cats generally go by different classifications than the pedigreed cats do, but rest assured that there are many distinctive and identifiable breeds of house cats that you can choose from.

Veterinarian Classifications

When a cat cannot be identifies into a specific breed of house cat, veterinarians have their own way of classifying these creatures. A “DSH” stands for a domestic short-haired cat, “DLH” refers to a domestic long-haired cat and the “DMH” is (you guessed it!) a domestic cat with medium-length hair. Your cat may also be referred to as a mixed breed if there are specific features that can be identified with a specific breed. Another interesting classification for breeds of house cats is the “polydactyl” cats, or the Hemingway cats. This name refers to cats that have extra toes, and many of these creatures were owned by the author, Ernest Hemingway. Because they indiscriminately bred, you can still find descendents of these cats today.

Color Patterns

Another way that breeds of house cats are classified is through their color patterns or markings. Tabbies are one of the oldest and most popular breeds of house cats around today. These cats can be identified through their stripes and spots, although some may have additional markings like bibs or boots. These cats are also sometimes known as tiger kitties for obvious reasons. Tabbies can come in a number of hues, including orange, grey and tan. Calico cats are always orange, black and white, although some will have faded versions of these shades and are known as “diluted” calicos. These cats can have quite beautiful coats with blocks of color throughout.

Another popular breed of house cat is the tortoiseshell, which takes the same three shades and weaves it throughout the coat, creating a tapestry effect. Usually tortoiseshell cats do not have much white on them, although a few will have some small white markings. It is interesting to note that most tri-color cats like the calicos and tortoiseshells are usually female. There are other breeds of house cats that are bi-colored, and these will generally come under patterns like the tuxedo cat and the bi-colored cat. Some cats will also only have points, like ears or paws, which are marked in a contrasting color. With the large variety of breeds of house cats available today, you are sure to find a family pet that is unique and beautiful.

Black Cat Breeds

Superstition Pertaining To Black Cat Breeds

Cats are among humans preferred companions in life as pets. Cats are often depicted as independent and difficult to keep in the home but are actually quite easy to domesticate and also very interesting to take care of. There are many superstitious and historical facts and beliefs concerning cats. In ancient Egypt, cats were once considered sacred while in other cultures they were considered as witches' familiars. Black cat breeds are among the most notoriously connected animals to superstition.

The Bombay Cat And Other Black Cat Breeds

There are many breeds of cats that have black as one of their permissible colors. There can be longhaired cats or Persians that are wholly black and there are also some shorthaired varieties that can be black. There is one particular black cat breed that focuses mainly on the color black and it is the Bombay cat. This cat is so called because if resembles a panther.

Other black cat breeds often permit their black cats to have another color or be a bicolor but the Bombay cat breed is only allowed to have black as their color and this has to be throughout the entire body, and the color must be to the roots. Several long to medium haired breeds of cats permit black cat breeds in their permissible colors.

Other breeds of cats that allow solid black are American Shorthair cats but they are not exclusively black since many other colors for the American shorthair are permissible. The British Shorthair also has black variants, the Burmese cat breed also have black cat breeds in their color variations and so do other longhaired varieties of cat breeds.

Black Cat Breeds And Witches

Black cats have long been associated with superstition and other supernatural occurrences and entities. It is probably their black coloring that has them connected to these. Superstition has it that witches used black cat breeds of any kind but usually the shorthaired variety as their familiars. Legend also has it that witches can turn themselves into a black cat and roam the area freely as an animal and be virtually invisible in dark places and at night due to the coloring of the cat. Suspected witches who perished at the stake had their black cat breeds accompany them during burning at the stake.

The more common black cat breeds that are usually associated with superstition and witches are the shorthaired variety. Seldom will you see a longhair black cat breed in most illustrations and pictures connected to superstitions and witches. Modern day witches also keep all sorts of black cat breeds and these are considered sacred.

Profile Of The Bengal Cat Breed

Profile Of The Bengal Cat Breed

The Bengal cat breed is a newcomer to the cat world. The breed was derived from the Asian Leopard Cat and from a domestic cat but other hybrid cats were also included in perfecting the breed along with the American shorthair and the Egyptian Mau. The breed was initially started in the early 1960’s but the project was abandoned soon after. Interest in producing a Bengal cat breed was revived during the early eighties.

Characteristics Of The Bengal Cat Breed

The Bengal cat breed is physically characterized by very recognizable horizontal striping on its face. The body of the Bengal is covered by rosettes or spots, pretty similar to those of a Jaguar, on the sides and the back. On the other parts of its body, the Bengal sports distinct stripes. Another variation of the Bengal cat breed is a marbled appearance of its coat but the most desirable markings are two toned rosettes.

Males are relatively larger and heavier than females. They weigh a maximum of around 15 lbs while females weigh about 8 – 10 lbs. The Bengal cat breed comes in three filial generations. This means that the F1 generation is a pure breed where one of the parents of the offspring is an Asian Leopard Cat. When the F1 Bengal mates with an ordinary domestic cat, the offspring is an F2. The F2 will produce F3 if it mates with a domestic cat. The further dilution of the Bengal cat breed will produce cats which will be considered as ordinary domestic cats.

Only cats up to F3 generation should be bred with each other in order to preserve the lineage of the Bengal cat breed. Any other additional mating with domestic cats will dilute the strain too much and the distinctive marking will not be retained or the offspring will retain characteristics from the domestic parent.

Temperament Of The Bengal Cat Breed

Bengal cats are not afraid of water and are often seen showing an avid interest in running or still water. The Bengal cat breed has lots of energy and is very lively. They are naturally curious about everyday activities and are often seen following their humans around the home as they perform daily tasks. These intelligent cats appreciate a good game of fetch or any other game that involves energy. They are quite friendly with people but are not your typical couch potatoes of lap cats.

The Bengal cat breed is a cat that needs lots of things to do or else it will turn destructive from boredom. They love to go outside and play with people but they are not noted to be quite good with other animals other than cats of the same breed.
